NATIONAL LIBRARIANS’ DAY

READING CELEBRATION

“Every Book Its Reader” with a Treasure Hunt

Preamble:- The Department of Library and Information Science at Swami Vivekanand Vidyaprasarak Mandal’s College of Commerce, Borim, Ponda, Goa, organized a “Reading Celebration” for all staff and students on Librarians Day, 10th August, centered around the theme “Every Book Its Reader”—the third law of library science proposed by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. The event aimed to engage users by placing clues in “lucky books” and organizing a treasure hunt to find hidden gifts, creatively fulfilling the third law, which emphasizes that every book should find its appropriate reader.

On 12th August 2024, the college hosted the esteemed “Gram Gaurav” event, graced by Chief Guest Shri. Subhash Shirodkar, Hon’ble Minister WRD and MLA of Shiroda Constituency, along with Guest of Honour Shri. Satish Naik, Sarpanch of Borim Village Panchayat, and other distinguished guests, including Shri. Prakash Prabhu, President of SVVM’s Mandal, and Shri. Ratnakar Desai, Secretary. The welcome address was delivered by Officiating Principal Dr. Shekhar Sawant, who highlighted the contributions of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the founder of Library Science in India, including his five laws of library science, and shared insights about his first library in Madras. Dr. Sawant also spoke about the life and work of Late Shri. Laxmidas Borkar, a multifaceted personality who was a freedom fighter, senior journalist, author, social worker, and a son of Borim village, and announced the screening of a documentary on his life.

The “Gram Gaurav” event commemorated the centenary death anniversary of Late Shri. Laxmidas Krishna Borkar with the screening of a documentary titled “Echoes of Heroes: The Son of Borim.” The documentary aimed to inspire students by highlighting the contributions of Shri. Borkar, who was a freedom fighter, senior journalist, author, and social worker, as well as other prominent figures from Borim like Shri. Bakibab Borkar and Shri. Manjunath Desai. The documentary was made with the assistance of Shri. Borkar’s son, Mr. Nitin Borkar, who provided photographs and necessary information. Librarian Mrs. Sonia Desai encouraged students to draw inspiration from Shri. Laxmidas Borkar, the purpose behind screening the documentary. Guest of Honour Shri. Satish Naik emphasized the importance of learning about local heroes like Shri. Borkar and advised students to focus on reading about great personalities instead of spending time on social media. Chief Guest Shri. Subhash Shirodkar stressed the importance of documentation and motivated students to acquire both knowledge and good values. He praised Shri. Borkar as a multifaceted personality whose life should serve as an inspiration to everyone. He also encouraged students to engage in both reading and creative writing. During the event, Mr. Nandesh Dessai, a support staff member, was awarded for his outstanding work by the Department of Library and Information Science. The event continued with a delightful session of “Grandparents’ Folk Tales” for Swami Vivekanand Parivaar students from the primary section, school, and higher secondary school, with enchanting stories narrated by college students. The event was expertly compered by Asst. Prof. Girish Kapdi, who kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the program. The vote of thanks was graciously proposed by librarian Sonia Desai, who expressed her gratitude to everyone present for making the celebration a resounding success.
